Vaginoplasty for Women: Tightening the Vaginal Canal and Perineum

Vaginoplasty for women, also called vaginal tightening surgery, narrows the vaginal opening and lower canal when laxity after vaginal birth or with age causes discomfort. At S Women's Clinic near Gangnam Station, Dr. Hye-Yeon Lee, a female OB/GYN specialist, completes it in under an hour without a hospital stay and examines you the next morning, after which you can fly home.

Who considers vaginal tightening surgery, and when it is not advised
The vagina is a muscular canal built to stretch. After one or more vaginal deliveries, many women find that the opening feels wider or that the canal no longer feels as firm as before, and the hormonal shifts of the menopause years can add to this. Vaginal laxity is common and it is not a disease; how much it bothers a woman varies a great deal. ACOG places vaginal tightening done for appearance or sensation among elective genital cosmetic procedures whose safety and effectiveness have not been established, and asks doctors to explain this plainly (ACOG, 2020).
Women who come to ask about the operation tend to describe something like this:
- A sense of looseness, or a wider vaginal opening, since giving birth
- A perineum that tore or was cut during delivery and healed thin or uneven
- Discomfort that has lasted long past the months after birth
- Self-consciousness about these changes that time has not settled
When Dr. Hye-Yeon Lee may advise against vaginoplasty for women
If you still plan to give birth vaginally, she may suggest waiting, since a later delivery can stretch the tissue again. Surgery is not done during pregnancy, while an infection is active, or before healing from your last delivery is complete.
A bulge or heavy feeling in the vagina, or urine leaking when you cough or run, points toward prolapse or stress incontinence. Both need their own medical assessment, and this operation is not offered as their treatment. Pelvic floor muscle training is usually the first step for laxity, and a 2026 review rated the evidence for both surgery and devices as low certainty (Randombage et al., 2026).
If the push for surgery comes mainly from a partner, or concern about your body is constant and distressing, she may recommend more time before any booking.
How vaginoplasty for women is carried out at the clinic
In medical terms, the operation combines a posterior colporrhaphy, which tightens the back wall of the vagina, with a perineoplasty, which rebuilds the perineum: the skin and muscle between the vaginal opening and the anus. At S Women's Clinic the narrowing starts at the entrance and continues deeper along the canal, stopping short of the cervix. The pelvic floor muscles on each side of the canal, known as the levator muscles, are drawn closer together. The vaginal lining and the muscle beneath it are then closed as separate layers with absorbable stitches.
Agreeing how much to narrow
The most important decision is the final width. Too little change can leave you wondering whether surgery was worthwhile, while too much can make intercourse and pelvic examinations painful. Dr. Hye-Yeon Lee examines you, listens to what you have noticed and what you hope will change, and settles the extent with you before the day. Clinic records from 2008 to 2026 count about 3,000 vaginoplasty procedures.
On the day of surgery
- Examination and a final talk with the doctor about the plan.
- Anesthesia: sleep sedation or local anesthesia, chosen together. If you choose sedation, come in after 4 hours without food or drink.
- The operation itself takes under an hour.
- No hospital stay is needed. Light daily activity is possible on the same day, and you can go back to your hotel without an escort; only patients under 18 need a parent or guardian with them.
Optional package: lining folds and an intimate PRP injection
A package on the fee schedule adds two steps to the tightening surgery: shaping of the small natural ridges (rugae) in the vaginal lining, and an injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) prepared from your own blood. Evidence that these additions bring extra benefit is limited, and the doctor will say at consultation whether she thinks the package is worth it for you.

Vaginoplasty for women: price in South Korea
- Vaginal tightening surgery: ₩4,500,000 before VAT, ₩4,950,000 with VAT
- Package adding lining-fold shaping and an intimate PRP injection: ₩6,990,000 before VAT, ₩7,689,000 with VAT
- Sleep sedation, optional: ₩200,000 before VAT, ₩220,000 with VAT, charged on top of the surgery fee; it does not apply under local anesthesia
The clinic sets its surgery fees without VAT, so the second figure on each line, with 10% VAT added, is the sum that will appear on your bill. Foreign visitors lost the VAT refund on cosmetic procedures at the end of 2025.
The vaginoplasty fee covers the examination on the morning after surgery and the follow-up examinations at about one week and one month. Items such as medication and sitz bath supplies are confirmed when you receive your quote, so ask which of them it lists. When labiaplasty is done in the same session, the fee for the two operations together is adjusted from their sum, and the quote shows how.
Healing after vaginoplasty for women, week by week
- Day 0
Surgery under sedation or local anesthesia, with no overnight stay. You can return to your hotel and manage light daily activity, on your own if you prefer.
- Day 1
Morning examination with Dr. Hye-Yeon Lee, required before travel. If all is well, you can fly home that afternoon, long-haul included, in loose clothing that does not press on the area. Sitz baths twice a day begin today.
- Day 7
Mild pain and light bleeding are common during the first week; if they continue, get them checked. Follow-up at about one week. As the stitches dissolve, a discharge with some odor can appear; extra sitz baths and keeping the area dry help.
- Day 28
Follow-up at about one month, in person or remotely. Pelvic floor (Kegel) exercises can start from around four weeks.
- Day 42
Intercourse can resume after about six weeks. For six months after surgery, the doctor reads the photos and questions you send by messenger and replies herself. Clotted, heavy bleeding, steadily rising pain or a fever means seeing a doctor where you live straight away.

Risks of vaginal tightening surgery and its limits
Every operation carries risk, and this one works on tissue that lies close to the rectum. The doctor goes through each point below before you consent:
- Bleeding, or blood collecting beneath the stitched lining (hematoma)
- Infection
- Pain during intercourse, particularly if the canal or opening ends up too narrow
- Separation of the wound along the stitch line
- A reaction to the stitches, with discharge while they dissolve
- Scar tissue that feels firm or tender
- Rarely, injury to the rectum or an abnormal opening between the vagina and the rectum (fistula)
Good evidence on outcomes is scarce. A systematic review did not confirm a change in sensation after vaginal narrowing procedures (Pereira et al., 2024), and a review of genital cosmetic surgery found few studies that follow benefit and harm over the long term (Wilkie et al., 2018). In a single-center perineoplasty study, most women reported satisfaction, while about one in ten described pain at the vaginal entrance during intercourse (Ulubay et al., 2016). We cannot guarantee a particular result, and a later vaginal birth or aging can bring laxity back.

Vaginoplasty for women: FAQ
Will a female doctor carry out my vaginal tightening surgery?
Yes. Dr. Hye-Yeon Lee, a Korean board-certified OB/GYN specialist working near Gangnam Station since 2008, examines you, performs the operation herself and reviews your healing afterwards. She is the only doctor at the clinic, so your surgery is never passed to someone you have not met.
How long should I stay in Seoul before flying home after vaginal tightening surgery?
Plan for at least one night. The doctor sees you in person on the morning after surgery, and that visit is required; if healing looks as expected, you can take a flight from that afternoon, even a long-haul route of ten hours plus. Travel in loose clothes and get up to stretch your legs during the flight.
How long after vaginal tightening surgery should I wait before having sex?
About six weeks. The stitched lining and the muscle layer need that long to heal, so intercourse waits until then even if you feel comfortable sooner. If you notice pain or bleeding when you first try, stop and send the doctor a message before trying again.
Do the vaginoplasty fees on this page include VAT?
Each fee appears twice: the schedule price before VAT and the total once 10% VAT is added. The tax refund that foreign visitors could once claim on cosmetic procedures no longer applies, so the VAT-inclusive figure is what you will pay. Sleep sedation, if you choose it, is added separately.
Can I talk to the clinic in English before and during my visit?
Yes. Before booking you can write in English through the form on this page or on WhatsApp, and we will get back to you as soon as possible. At the clinic, staff can help you in English on the day, and Japanese and Chinese support is also available.
What happens to my deposit if I cancel or move my surgery date?
Under the clinic's current practice, a deposit is returned if you cancel before the day of surgery, is kept if you cancel on the day itself, and stays in place if you change the date. Refunds of the surgery fee follow usual practice at Korean medical clinics. Cards issued outside Korea are accepted.
Is vaginoplasty for women the same operation as gender-affirming vaginoplasty?
No. The two share a name but are different operations. This page describes vaginal tightening surgery for women, which narrows an existing vaginal canal and rebuilds the perineum after stretching from childbirth or age. Gender-affirming vaginoplasty creates a vagina and belongs to a separate field of surgery.
Does vaginal tightening surgery hurt?
You are under sleep sedation or local anesthesia while it is done. Afterwards, mild pain and light bleeding are common through the first week, and how much varies between women. If pain keeps building when it should be easing, or bleeding turns heavy, contact the clinic or a local doctor.
Will vaginal tightening surgery fix bladder leaks or a prolapse?
No. The operation is offered for laxity, and it is not a treatment for urinary incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse. Leaking when you cough, or a bulge or dragging feeling in the vagina, needs separate medical assessment, and the doctor will tell you at examination if she suspects either one.
Should I wait until I have finished having children?
It is worth thinking about. A later vaginal delivery can stretch the tissue again, so it often makes sense to plan the operation after your last planned birth. Share your plans at consultation; the doctor will also check that healing from your most recent delivery is complete.
Do the stitches need to be removed after vaginoplasty for women?
No. Absorbable stitches close both the lining and the muscle layer, so there is no removal appointment. While they dissolve, usually from the second week, a discharge with a slight odor is common and expected; frequent sitz baths and keeping the area dry make this easier.
What does the package with PRP add to the surgery?
It adds two steps on the same day: shaping of the small ridges in the vaginal lining and an injection of platelet-rich plasma prepared from your own blood. Evidence for extra benefit from these additions is limited, so the doctor talks through whether they suit you before you choose.
How is my surgery date planned around my period?
Share your expected period dates when you book. The date is set so that your period does not fall on the day of vaginal tightening surgery or the two to three days after it, and if your cycle changes before the trip, the schedule can be moved.
